Linda Rathgeber Fireworks MX sample files:
Instructions for saving the files for easy access in the future

Note: You may reuse these files if you want, but they are not part of the product. Technical support will not be able to answer any questions about these files.

We hope you enjoy learning more about Fireworks MX by exploring these many sample files. You may also find the clipart and starter objects (such as the premade buttons) helpful in developing your work.

The sample files organization
The files that you decompressed after downloading them from Macromedia.com are in four categories. The items for each category are in separate folders, as follows:

Category folder: Items contained
in folder
File names
LR_Libary 4 PNG files Animations_LR.png, Bullets_LR.png, Buttons_LR.png, Themes_LR.png
LR_Samples 6 PNG files Amboseli.png, Embossed.png, Grunge.png, Liftoff.png, Ping.png, Rollem.png
LR_Styles 3 STL files Metal.stl, Seashell.stl, Sumi-i.stl
LR_Textures 6 GIF files Gigham.gif, Knit.gif, Lace.gif, Needlepoint.gif, Pique.gif, Tortellini.gif

You may have downloaded all the sample files or you may have downloaded a particular category or categories. These instructions are broken down by category so they can be used in either situation.

Options for storing the sample files
You can store the files anywhere and still access them through the user interface in Fireworks MX. (The one exception to this general rule is accessing the STL files in the Pop-up Menu Wizard, but this will be discussed in greater detail below.) However, for the easiest access you should store them in particular application folders. These instructions show you where to store the different files or folders and how to access them when you're ready to use them.

Be sure to check to see where you saved the files after decompressing them. If you have trouble downloading or decompressing the files, see TechNote 13686.

Below you'll find instructions for each of the sample file categories:

The LR_Library folder
To store your LR_Library files for quick access within the Fireworks MX application:

  1. First, locate your Fireworks MX application folder. Depending on how you installed Fireworks MX, the path to this folder is probably similar to:

    Windows: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Fireworks MX
Macintosh: HD: Applications: Macromedia Fireworks MX

  2. In the Fireworks MX application folder, open the Configuration folder and then open the Libraries folder.
  3. Move or copy the four PNG files from the LR_Library folder to the Libraries folder (in the application Configuration folder). The four PNG files that you will move into the Libraries folder are:
  4. Restart Fireworks MX if it is currently open.

To access the library items from within Fireworks MX, do the following:

  1. Open a new or existing file in Fireworks.
  2. Choose Edit > Libraries and then any of the Libary folder files, such as Animations_LR.png.
  3. The Import Symbols dialog box appears. Select one or all of the symbols in the PNG file.
  4. Click Import.
  5. The symbols will be imported and stored in the Library panel. To open the Libary panel, choose Window > Library. An instance of each symbol imported will also appear on the canvas.
  6. Note: To modify an animation symbol, select it on the canvas. Then choose Modify > Animation > Settings. This will give you access to the automated settings that originally created the symbol.

Note: Even if you don't save these library files into the application Libraries folder, you can still access them by choosing Edit > Libraries > Other and then navigating to the location where you decided to store these files.

The LR_Samples folder
The 6 PNG files in the LR_Samples folder are like any other PNG files that you create and work with. However, to make it easy to remember where they are, you can save them into the pre-existing Samples folder in the Fireworks MX application folder.

  1. First, locate your Fireworks MX application folder.
  2. In the Fireworks MX application folder, open the Samples folder.
  3. Move or copy the LR_Samples folder into the application Samples folder.

To access the contents of the LR_Samples folder from within Fireworks MX, choose File > Open and then navigate to the Fireworks MX application folder. Open the LR_Samples folder and select one or several PNG files to open.

The LR_Styles folder
Putting these files in an easy-to-remember and easy-to-find location is a bit trickier. The STL files may not be stored in the application folder, depending on your operating system. Most likely, they will be stored in special application-support folders that are unique to your use of the computer.

There are two folders you can put your styles files in: the Styles folder and the Nav Menu folder. The Styles folder is for the Styles panel in Fireworks MX and the Nav Menu folder is for the styles that are available for the Pop-Up Menu Wizard.

To make new styles easily available for the Styles panel:

  1. First, locate the folder that holds the Styles and Nav Menu folders. The location of this holding folder will depend on your operating system. The path to this folder is probably similar to the following:

    Windows XP/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Macromedia\Fireworks MX
Macintosh OS X: HD: Users:YourUserFolder: Library: Application Support: Macromedia: Fireworks MX
Macintosh 9.x: HD: System Folder: Application Support: Macromedia: Fireworks MX

  2. In the Fireworks MX folder, open the Styles folder.
  3. Copy the three STL files from the LR_Styles folder to the Styles folder. The three STL files that you will move into the Styles folder are:
  4. Copy the three STL files from the LR_Styles folder to the Nav Menu folder.
  5. Restart Fireworks MX if it is currently open.

To access the new styles from within Fireworks MX, do the following:

  1. Open a new or existing file in Fireworks.
  2. Open the Styles panel. If it is not visible in a panel group, choose Window > Styles.
  3. Open the Styles panel Options pop-up menu (upper-right corner of the panel) and select Import Styles.
  4. In the Open dialog box, navigate to find the Styles folder you just placed the STL files in.
  5. Click Open. The new styles will appear on the Styles panel.
  6. Select a vector shape on the canvas.
  7. Click the style you want to apply to the vector shape.

Note: Even if you didn't save these library files into the Styles folder, you can still access them by navigating to the location where you decided to store these files in the Open dialog box for importing styles.

To add new styles to the Pop-up Menu Wizard:

  2. In the Fireworks MX folder, open the Nav Menu folder.
  3. Copy the three STL files from the LR_Styles folder to the Nav Menu folder. The three STL files that you will move into the Nav Menu folder are:
  4. Copy the three STL files from the LR_Styles folder to the Nav Menu folder.
  5. Restart Fireworks MX if it is currently open.

To access the new styles from within the Pop-up Menu Wizard, do the following:

  1. In the Pop-up Menu Wizard, click the Appearance tab.
  2. Select the Image option for Cells.
  3. Scroll in the Styles menus for the Up State and/or the Down State to select one of the new styles.
  4. Continue making selections for your pop-up menus in the Wizard.

Note: Putting STL files in the Nav Menu folder is the only way to make them accessible in the Pop-up Menu Wizard.

The LR_Textures folder
To store your LR_Textures for quick access within the Fireworks MX application:

  1. First, locate your Fireworks MX application folder.
  2. In the Fireworks MX application folder, open the Configuration folder and then open the Textures folder.
  3. Move or copy the six GIF files from the LR_Textures folder to the Textures folder (in the application Configuration folder). The six GIF files that you will move into the Textures folder are:
  4. Restart Fireworks MX if it is currently open.

To access the new textures from within Fireworks MX:

  1. In an open file in Fireworks MX, select a vector shape.
  2. On the Property inspector, select Solid in the Fill Category pop-up menu.
  3. Click the Texture pop-up menu to make a selection. Select one of the new textures in the list, such as Lace.

Note: Even if you don't save these texture files into the application Textures folder, you can still access them by selecting Other in the Textures pop-up menu on the Property inspector. Then navigate to the location where you decided to store these texture files.
